Anzoleta Dopo La Regata by G. Rossini

Katrina F.

  • “Anzoleta dopo la regata” by Gioachino Rossini is part of a song cycle entitled La regata veneziana, or The Venetian Regatta. It recounts the Venetian regatta from Anzoleta, a young woman's perspective, who cheers on her boyfriend, Momolo, preparing for these gondola races. “Anzoleta dopo la regata,” or “Anzoleta after the regatta” is the third and last song, when Anzoleta watches Momolo win the races. Anzoleta is filled with pride and joy, and she showers him with kisses as the entirety of Venice raves about him. This song stretched my coloratura agility and enabled me to keep my technique grounded while not letting my character and stage presence drop. At first, I kept running out of breath and couldn’t get the intonation right. But with patience, practice, and time, I was able to not only learn the song, but find eventual enjoyment in embodying Anzoleta’s subtle confidence.

  • Creativity challenges me to become the best version of myself by finding new ways to convey thoughts, feelings, and lived experiences through song. No interpretation is right or wrong, but the beauty of music is that it can be perfect or imperfect, but just as impactful to even one person.
