Lost

Anne S.

  • This piece of flash fiction follows a man lost in the woods. It's a simple premise—writing anything complicated is difficult when you're trying to keep it short. Unable to connect to anyone on his phone, the man runs into a fox and ends up following it deeper and deeper into the forest, eventually laying down to sleep on a tree.

The forest is really the star of the story, and I spent a lot of my time figuring out how exactly to describe it. I've always found forests beautiful, but they also have a dangerous sort of mystery to them; so many things could happen unnoticed deep within a forest. This piece of flash fiction is me exploring one of those possibilities that I found interesting, and trying to capture how magical I feel nature can be.

  • Creative writing allows me to articulate my thoughts and feelings and put them into the world for others to read. Oftentimes it's challenging to be vulnerable with what I've written, but I've found that allowing others to read my work can make me feel incredibly heard.
