Mother’s Daughter

Atira W.

  • I wrote these two pieces as the eldest daughter of an immigrant mother. I will forever be grateful for the things my mom sacrificed to make my life what it is and while she did break some generational curses, she did not break them all. These pieces are about my experience caught in generational cycles of trauma and mental illness that have passed from daughter to daughter to daughter for decades.

  • I explore my creativity through a number of mediums as a way to tell my story and other untold stories. I use it to express emotions I have difficulty saying out loud. I use it to share social justice issues and rewrite traditional narratives while playing with social lenses like race and queerness.
