Salient

Jane O.

  • I started creating art about how humans experience trauma because I was overwhelmed by the scale of suppressed suffering occurring in hidden pockets of the world. My ideas often sprouted from literature I was reading at the time on internal moral conflict, mortality, and identity.

I worked on Salient for eight months before finishing. Rendering graphite is, at its core, a test of patience, and I often found creating this work forced me to slow down and trust a final result would emerge. I aimed to capture the decay of youthful innocence through a connection to nature: with shattered realities and dead old-selves comes growth and rebirth.

  • Creativity is my reaction to the world around me. It is translating the abstract into the tangible, uprooting artistry in the mundane, and finding universality in private experiences.
