2023 Submissions
When the Rain turns the Streets to Mirrors
My piece is made up of observations I made about how the world looks in the rain. I took those observations and added references to what it's like to not know yourself and your reflection.
Relinquish Unto Earth
This is a poem I wrote a bit earlier this year during a time that was incredibly hard for me. It was a way for me to reflect on what I had been going through and the things I had been feeling and hopefully realize that the pain and futility in my actions weren’t worth any outcome that could come of them.
When the Sun Burns Out
My poem is almost like a metaphor reflecting on how the bright spirit of a child changed so fast, burning out like the sun eventually will. Tired of trying and ready to give up.
Irreparable
My short story was inspired by my mom and some of the experiences she has detailed to me throughout my life about my older sister, the abusive relationship she had with my sister's father, and the struggles she went through with leaving him.
The Two Friends Raced Down the Rocky Trail
This is a piece of writing that I began in seventh grade and finished my senior year of high school. It was the first piece of my writing that other people - family members and friends - were genuinely moved by and compelled to share.
Poetry Collection
I've included three poems, "Conditional Love Poem," "Stars 11/8," and "Dysphoria's Late Night Diary." All three poems are about dysphoria, specifically gender dysphoria, and were all originally journal entries created as a way for me to try to express what I was feeling, since it is easier to explain it through metaphors and ideas rather than simple terms.
The Evolution of the Color Brown
One thing I pride myself on in my writing is writing about real experiences. I put hours of effort into making sure my characters and their dialogue are real, and that everyone can find reliability in my writing.
M.E.T.A.
META is the beginning of a screenplay I started as my humble love letter to fantasy, trope and humanity. It was borne from my desire to tell a story about a character escaping her fate as the "woman in the fridge," a trope in which people (usually women) die for the sake of male character development.
Tangible Nostalgia
The poem in the submission explores the theme of tangible nostalgia, recalling various objects and experiences from my childhood.
New Years 2023
I wrote this piece responding to a prompt for one of my college applications and it turned into something I’m really proud of. The prompt was “Write a short film script about two different people getting stuck on an elevator during New Years Eve.”
poems of the overtaken
Poetry was how I processed this traumatic experience; I tried to tread lightly with my words out of respect for possible triggers for readers, but also tried to evoke the extreme discomfort I felt during my experience.
Erosion
Upon starting this piece, I wanted to write about the mental toll that torture, or prolonged repetition, has on the human mind. How do our senses of self “erode” when we are pushed to madness? In this piece, a man who claims to love his family, to do anything for them, is subjected to Chinese Water Torture by an unnamed, un-recognized figure.
In Our Darkness
This poem describes the connection between my past and present self. I've recently been reminiscing about my childhood years, where life seemed so much simpler.
Click, Bang! Reload. & Someone called me a human; I was offended.
I think writing is a form of therapy at times, and so I looked at this poem as a way to rearrange words and phrases in a way that could help me face my fear.
And Now She's Gone
I wrote this short story a little while ago when I was thinking about an old friend. I really liked the rough draft I began with and I continued to workshop the story, taking out and adding new parts. While the narrative changed throughout the process, the characters stayed generally the same.
Love is Blueming
This collection of poems is called Love is Blueming as each poem relates to both love, and the color blue. I chose the color blue because it is a beautiful color that represents many things, mainly loyalty, imagination, and inspiration.
Poetry Collection
These poems are fictional stories but the themes all relate to experiences and emotions I have. "Its the End and the Beginning All Over Again" is the narrator reminiscing through the seasons of her childhood and how everything has changed since then.
In the Cobble Stone Cracks
I created this piece of writing a couple of years ago when I was new to the creative writing program and now that I have continued to pursue this talent of mine I've revised and adapted the piece so that I am now able to feel proud of it.
