2023 Submissions
The Creation of Butterflies, Sun Puddle, Entanglement
These prompts were inspired by my creative writing teacher in class.
Singing Beach
The submitted pieces are part of a year-long school assignment where I write a 60-page collection of creative nonfiction. The story is part of my ultimate goal to create a published chapbook.
Make Believe
Prior to the creation of my piece, I detested micro-fiction. I couldn't comprehend why people enjoyed the overly condensed format and I was jealous of people who made strong works with such low word count.
I Hate You
I Hate You is about the feeling you have when you have a crush on someone who doesn’t like you back.
Expectations Leaving us Unfulfilled
I have OCD. Growing up my OCD has always changed and effected me even when I thought I had overcome it. Recently at this point in my life I felt unhappy with myself. I would constantly overfill my plate and think I could do everything.
Once a Hero
My short fiction story is about a villain who was once a hero. When I started writing, I thought about books that I read. Inspired by morally grey characters’ complexity and that “life is not always black and white,” I decided to write a story embracing these characters since readers, including myself, usually question if these characters’ actions are “good” or “bad.”
... breathe / A Simple Life
"… breathe” and “A Simple Life” are two separate poems that both encompass the theme of life. When writing these poems, I wanted to show my own interpretations of this rather subjective topic.
I Pledge Allegiance
My artwork is a collection of two poems that detail the experiences I and many others have had as an immigrant living in the United States of America. I've personally always felt that I didn't quite belong here in this country, a feeling that in the past years has only grown stronger as I and my people have been shunned and assaulted.
a 2017 summer in thailand. addiction [america]. the parallels.
When I first started writing poetry, I always found myself writing my way back to origins, to my childhood, and to all the things that shaped me to be the person I am today. So I figured, if I was going to end up back at the start, why not take you along for the ride?
Perspective
I wanted to make a perspective piece in which the reader would think one thing in the beginning but then the ending would change their thoughts from before.
Truth and Purpose
Every poem that I write starts with a thought, an observation, or a question. Writing, especially poetry, helps me decipher the complexities of the world.
Small World
The story features a dystopian setting due to climate change, which is a pressing issue in our world today.
Longing for Savory
“Longing for Savory” follows a young Chinese American’s denial, rejection, and eventual acceptance of their identity, mirrored by their relationship with their parents and culture.
Oak
My pieces are my experiences and my expression. An outlet to share my stories with the hope of somebody reading what I write or hearing what I say to know that I see you, I feel you I share your struggle. I tend to write a lot about my hardships through my life and the hardships of my family and the people in my community.
A Goal at Last
Every four years, I always look forward to watching the FIFA World Cup. As an event that brings together six continents, I love how a simple sport can create a sense of community.
