Bach Cello Suite No. 2 in D Minor, Prelude

Daniel K.

  • While listening to many recordings of Bach’s Suite No. 2 Prelude, there were two mainstream styles: aggressive and dark, or rhythmic and harmonic. Instead of conforming to one or the other, I decided to really bring out the dark aspect. The piece is in D minor, which on its own gives a naturally dark feeling. But I wanted to put different types of darkness into my performance: desolation in the beginning, anger and regret towards the middle/end, and a sense of sorrow and acceptance at the very end. I thought I could capture this character effectively, as I myself went through a dark period in my life. At the end, I added my own improvisation to match the sense of regret and sorrow.

  • Creativity is the ability to use existing knowledge to make something new. In music performance, it is the combination of the composer’s original intent and historical context, the many existing interpretations of the piece, and your own life experiences, which creates a personal interpretation that is both unique yet traditional.
