Do Not Touch

  • It’s always the woman’s fault. She was just “asking for it.” She shouldn’t have been wearing that. One out of every six women in the US has been a victim of sexual assault. Many of their assailants continue to walk free with no repercussions. On the contrary, victims are the ones shamed and scorned; after all, it was her fault. She should have been more careful. As a female, I constantly find myself on edge when I am around unfamiliar males. Classmate I’ve never really talked to? Suspicious. Teacher being a little too friendly? Suspicious. Any stranger who tries to interact with me? Suspicious. Despite everything, however, I still hold hope that one day we can live in a more equal world—a world where a woman can feel safe wearing a bikini at the beach or taking a walk alone at night.

  • To me, creativity means seeing the beauty in the ordinary and in all aspects of life, blending concrete observations with logic and emotion to produce beautiful artwork that expresses a profound idea or represents a part of myself.
