Homage to Dylan

This is an image of the late skateboarder and model Dylan Rieder who sadly passed away due to leukemia in 2016. In the middle is a memorial photo for Dylan Rieder’s last pro skateboard made to commemorate him, with his own silhouette surrounding him in contrasting colors on the left and right. The making of this piece was inspired by my experience with skateboarding, and watching Dylan Rieder skate. The making of this artwork consisted of me photographing the board (the image in the middle) in a dark room with lights to illuminate his face, and editing that image to surround him on the left and right. The four silhouettes of Dylan’s face represent the burden of his disease that was following him within the final years of his life skateboarding, and in the hospital during his battle with cancer.

To me, in photography creativity means to capture a moment that you personally find interest in, and using those images themselves to express what you find intriguing, or to transform them into something physical that you genuinely think is compelling.
