Lilies

This is a drawing close friend of mine, which I feel expresses both my interests in surrealism and in portraiture. I initially tried to get a more traditional position, with my friend facing straight forward, but she turned just as I took the photo, which produced a more natural reference. From there, I completed the image digitally, using a mostly pinks and blues, but allowing the leaves to be more cyan, to emphasize the unnatural quality of the flowers; which are growing out of the back of her head. I attempted to portray the humor embedded in my friend’s personality with bright colors and swirls, which was a challenge, as I usually prefer a more limited pallet, but I feel there is a sort of elegance inherent in lilies, which allows for a sort of balance.

To me, creativity is about freedom of expression. I learned many of my technical skills from studying realism, and have been told that it is not truly ”creative” because of it’s calculated, mathematical nature. However, if I hadn’t learned realism, I wouldn’t be able to create creative pieces like this.
