Matilda

  • My piece examines the dynamic shown in the movie Matilda, between Matilda and Ms.Trunchbull. Matilda finds freedom through learning while Ms. Trunchbull is constricted by the expectations that society places on her. In a revealing scene, Ms. Trunchbull is terrified by a tiny salamander that a student has placed in her water glass. This shows the reality that, while Ms. Trunchbull is big and strong, she is actually deeply insecure and scared. Ms. Trunchbull is trapped by society in the stereotype of a vengeful, unmarried, and masculine woman. By putting her in the place of the salamander, I depict her reality of feeling trapped in her role and powerless against the smart and kind Matilda. Matilda holds the real power.

  • My creativity is how I interpret the world around me, specifically, how I am able to enjoy the process of learning and growing. High school can be really hard and through my art I’ve developed a perspective that helps me make the most of it.
