Men Don’t Cry

Mark W.

Ballpoint Pen, Graphite

  • It’s hard for men in this day and age to show emotion. This man is depicted holding in his emotion and turning to a cigarette to release stress, however, he cannot express it and instead smoke comes out of his eyes, not his mouth. This symbolizes what would’ve been his tears. When making art, I tend to reach for materials in arms-length for conveniency because I make art as my way of coping with stress. As a result, this piece was a reflection of what I was feeling at the time, and I thought that the black ball point pen added a nice contrast and intensity to this real-world problem, along with my relations to it.

  • Creativity is how you express yourself. It isn’t what you’re taught: it’s how you put two and two together to make something new. Creativity is helpful, original, and subjective because everyone is a different person. You use creativity to navigate everyday life, like communicating with other people- not just art.
