pastel on paper

A candid portrait of my mother enjoying a matcha flavored waffle. This piece was a way for me to capture her beauty in a way that she does not see in herself. An outer perspective of what she looks like when she is genuinely happy, not putting up a face for the picture. The pastel was difficult to work with as I couldn’t erase dark spots and shadows as easily as the highlights, which meant I had to be specific about where I placed every stroke of pastel. My main goal for this piece was to exude happiness and pull emotion from the viewer.

Creativity is the freedom of displaying who you are through your life and actions, seeing colors when there are none. Creativity is an outlet for inspiration and joy. It’s everywhere and it’s only a matter of whether people can dig to find it or not.
