seventeen

For me, turning seventeen was an awakening: an illuminated liminal space between childhood and adulthood, simplicity and freedom. In my poem, I seek to express at once the breathtaking liberty and crushing pressure of growing up. While the imagery of seventeen conveys the overwhelming abundance of time, its rhyme and rhythm create a sense of acceleration — a crescendo of couplets that ultimately ends in a question mark.

For me, living is art -- the shapes of the telephone wires outside my house, picking through apples in a grocery store, crying, sleeping, falling in love -- everything is part of this orchestra of being. When I write, I’m translating the art I’ve lived and giving it back to the world.
