I am deeply interested in Biblical stories and the significance behind them. For this piece, “The Path to Nineveh”, my intent was to portray the Biblical story of Jonah’s whale, in which Jonah tries to escape from God’s command to prophesy to the people of Nineveh, but is swallowed by a whale for 3 days before being spit out and obeying God. I wanted to create chaotic scene which hints at God’s control of the situation. The portrayal of this story reveals how you cannot run or hide from God, and that God is in control. For the composition, I wanted a raging sea with Jonah in the center, being tossed within the storm. I wanted a sky that retained a sense of God’s presence, so I painted golden sky mostly covered by storm clouds. I experimented with the colors and techniques, like using crumpled paper for the water splashes.

For me, creativity is the ability to explore, think, and create. It is the original formation of unique concepts, images, and/or methods. Creativity allows me to express my ideas and beliefs and, in my art, bend reality to my ideas.
