Meditations

Sebastian W.

  • My piece represents meditations, hence its name, although more specifically a type of meditation involving a calm, meandering stream of thought, not quite focused, not quite dissociative. It consists of two main themes, the first introduced from measures 1 through 18, the second from measures 19 through 37, which alternate and weave together throughout the remainder of the piece. The first theme has four phrases in an ABBA pattern, with the "A" phrase being calmer both rhythmically and harmonically, while the "B" phrase has a faster ostinato, tenser harmonies, and a higher register. This creates a sense of flowing from a place of calm to a place of yearning, with more drive behind it, and then back again. This keeps the theme centered while still in motion, not unlike a state of meditation in which thoughts and feelings flow through like waves, keeping things centered while still having moments of motion.

The second theme meanders more, with a greater range, moving baseline, and faster tempo, although it for the most part stays very quiet. It then represents a metaphorical "walk through the garden of the mind"-with motion, but not any urgency. The piece then modulates into F minor for the first theme, before settling back into home key, keeping both the meandering motion and of the piece while maintaining a sense of being centered. The piece then combines the two themes towards a climactic sigh, before settling into a slower version of the first theme.

I mainly composed the piece just as a pretty and calm piece, to contrast some earlier works of mine in a cycle of preludes, but I found its name as something to fit its mood later.

  • To me, creativity means finding new forms of self-expression, finding ways specific to my experiences to have my voice be heard, whether through music, visual art, or really any form of artistic medium.
