Finger Laces

El Y.

  • I’ve always been fascinated by labor and production, especially as it pertains to how much American manufacturing has been exported. Growing up and blessed with a curious mind, I’ve always wondered how things like clothes or electronics are made and how they come to be. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned how exploitative manufacturing can be. I came up with the idea of shoes with finger laces because I wanted to describe the pain and exploitation of people, including children. The choice of using finger laces was to show how faceless workers give up their labor-- their bodies, their autonomy for our convenience and corporate profits.

  • Making art is how I explore society and the world. It is how I explore topics like labor rights, identity politics, and the climate crisis.
