Brace Yourself

Iris Y.

Acrylic Paint

  • It was the year I got my braces off, after almost 5 years of tacky metal in my mouth. In a way, the braces grew up with me, I was 11 when I got them, and now I’m 16. This piece’s intention is like a farewell to my childhood. With the braces and sparkly nail polish (childhood elements), it represents what it’s like being a kid, and since I’m turning into a young adult, these elements will no longer be apart of my life. During this painting, I started with a underpainting and quickly started to block the colors. One of my biggest difficulties was definitely getting the colors right and making the details look accurate to the reference. Painting the minuscule braces in tiny details was really tedious, but besides all the hardships, I am pleased with the result and I think I was able to serve the purpose.

  • Creativity to me is the ability to go beyond realistic limits and stretch your mind and imagination as far as you can.
