I completed this song over the summer of 2023, and I wrote it for a digital vocal recital.

I composed this piece based on the book ”Ghost Music” by An Yu.

“The Whiteness of the Whale,” a chapter from Mellville’s Moby-Dick, juxtaposes a multitude of seemingly miscellaneous but vivid imagery with the concepts of whiteness and nihilism, and questions our perception of reality.

I started working this song in May. One day, I was messing around on my guitar, and I created a riff that I really liked.

The text in this piece was written by me, inspired by seeing several crows sitting on a power line.

While messing around with some simple chords, trying to make them anew, I made a small melody that I mimicked with my voice, and added lyrics to.

”Journey” is an ode to the people and things in life we hold dear.

My school had an issue with littering and a lack of respect for our shared spaces.

While most of my compositions are heavily based in improvisation, and are often fluid in form, with this piece I wanted to try creating a structured arrangement for a full quartet.

In this piece, I decided to base my writing off of the motif of a small step down followed by a larger jump down and then a small step back up.
